Saunders given the green light on Phases 2 & 3 of the former Connaught Estate regeneration project in Woolwich.

16-10-2017

Full planning permission has been received via Reserved Matters for Phases 2 & 3 of the One Woolwich regeneration project. In total, 684 new homes will be built in three phases on the site of the former Connaught Estate.

Led by Director Steve Hutchinson, the Saunders team worked with a large team of consultants to prepare the detailed scheme design. Using their experience to exploit the natural contours of the site, the team was able to incorporate an additional 10 dwellings into the scheme, over and above the number envisaged at outline approval. Plans were reviewed for compliance prior to applying for approval to ensure smooth progress through to the technical stage. Planning permission was granted on the 11th September and groundworks are underway following technical design being prepared during the planning process.

The Saunders design approach

Phases 2&3 of the Woolwich regeneration project includes terraced housing, mansion block apartments ranging from 4 to 10 storeys in height, innovative central courtyard landscaping, open areas, and undercroft parking courts. The range of residential units helps to break down the former “estate” identity, and careful design for future adaptability gives residents the opportunity to remain in their home through to retirement.

The architectural approach is contemporary but in keeping with the immediate and wider landscape. There is close attention to detail: brickwork elevations are crisp and form a robust street edge incorporating stone detailing and framing. The internal elevations to the courtyards are clad in rich red boarding with fin detailing. The street elevations have been carefully designed to create an active edge with clearly expressed entrances, a regular rhythm of windows, and both projecting and recessed balconies.

Now that planning permission has been granted, Saunders is concentrating on delivering high quality homes in an attractive environment for the residents of Woolwich.
