Crown Centre, Stourbridge

Client

Tesco Stores Ltd, Dudley Library Service, Town Hall and Council

The regeneration of the Stourbridge town centre involved the demolition of the existing shopping precinct and its replacement with a mixed use centre comprising retail and office accommodation. The new Crown Centre development includes a new town square, a shopping centre including a 90,000 sq.ft gross Tesco food store linked to the Stourbridge theatre, library and listed Town Hall, 12 retail units totalling 8,500 sq.ft, 3,000 sq.ft of office accommodation, and a multi-storey basement car park for 500 cars.

The form and materials have been influenced by the existing urban grain and palette of materials in the High Street and the wider town centre. The design reflects these local materials in a contemporary manner to express key viewpoints and features of the development.

Saunders achieved planning approval after considerable consultation with planners, urban designers and various local committees and interest groups, subsequently undertaking working drawings for construction through to completion.
