As part of a strategically important connection to London and the M25 Waltham Cross is steeped in history and retains one of the finest examples of the Eleanor Cross memorials in the heart of the town centre. Saunders Partnership’s proposals sought to reconnect the disparate elements of the town, with the Eleanor Cross as a focal space connecting these areas and linking them to the bus & railway station and the nearby proposed Olympic site as part of the Waltham Cross Renaissance Strategy promoted by the Local Authority.

Saunders Partnership prepared a series of masterplans after in- depth analysis of the town’s history, transportation, retail and social/ emotional needs. These masterplans and briefing documents fed into the opportunities to link all these elements to the new Olympic white-water rafting centre and the town’s strategy document. By creating a journey and sequential landmarks throughout the Olympic corridor, opportunities were assessed and potential design solutions established with long-lasting sustainable improvements paramount.±
